Add Purpose to Your Life with These Strategies

A person who does not have a purpose in life is usually not happy or content. They feel lost, unmotivated, and disappointed in life. They are constantly looking for and trying new and “of the moment” things to fill the void and the restlessness they feel in their lives.

Lack of purpose can affect all areas of your life, including your mental and physical health. Having a purpose in life can positively affect your overall well-being and can help fill your life with deeper meaning and more joy.

So how can you add purpose to your life? Try these strategies:

  1. Take a well-deserved break. Having a break from your daily life can do wonders for your mood. Often, when you don't feel like doing anything, you might be burned out or just stressed. A break helps recharge your batteries and gives you a new perspective.

    • Give yourself a mental health day. On that day, decide to let go of what you think you're should to do and focus on what makes you happy.

    • Many people believe that successful and productive life is about “doing.” However, sometimes it is beneficial to just “be”—pushing the pause button on your regular routine may be just what you need to recharge your batteries.

    • Taking a break gives you the time and the space for you to discover what lights you up, which may lead you to your true purpose in life. Once you start to feel the positive effects of this discovery process, you will then feel motivated to do more.

  2. Follow things that interest you. Many people have interests they'd like to pursue but don't. They ignore those interests because it seems like a waste of time or because they feel they should spend their time elsewhere.

    • The truth is that stringing together your hobbies and interests can help you discover your purpose.

    • For example, if you love jewelry, start a jewelry business online.

    • If you love photography, create your own photography business. And if you love graphic design, design business cards, brochures, and other materials.

    • That's not to say your purpose needs to relate to making money. But it should relate to something you're passionate about. You want a purpose that excites you and makes your heart sing.

  3. Follow artistic endeavors. Many people turn to artistic modalities as a way of expressing their feelings. Writing, painting, sculpting, or even dancing can help you unlock feelings you were too afraid to feel.

    • When you express your emotions via your chosen modality, you'll release some of the pressure inside you and feel better and more passionate about things in your life again.

    • Exercising your artistic side via a physical activity like dancing also helps because it makes you feel better, giving you more purpose.

    • The goal isn't to sell your works of art or make a name for yourself but to enjoy and express yourself.

  4. Admit that you're stuck. The thing with getting stuck in a cycle is, you don't notice it right away. The feelings slowly build-up, and before you know it, you've become apathetic. You begin to feel like everything you do is just killing time.

    • Those feelings can turn into discouragement, lack of motivation, and stress. Regardless of how hard you try, the cycle keeps repeating itself.

    • The loop won't change until you recognize it for what it is. And once you do, you can break it for good by admitting you’r stuck and asking for help.

  5. Don't hesitate to speak to others. The pandemic has made it difficult to move freely and interact with friends and loved ones. If you're feeling isolated, try reaching out to someone—family, friends, or even a trained professional--even if only by phone.
